Manu ki Sarkar

If we wish to understand how the Indian men’s minds are filled with filth about women, we need to read Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. The architect of the Indian Constitution had painstakingly pointed out that the misery of women in Indian society is because of the laws of Manu.

.

The Constitution of India and the Hindu Code Bill might have considerably weakened Manu’s hold over the institution of marriage in Hindu society. However, the contempt for women that Manu-Smriti has instilled is harboured and abides in the minds of men. More than 90 years after Dr. Ambedkar’s act of burning the Manu-Smriti, are we even willing to blame it and condemn it publicly? This question is for all, but pointedly for the self-proclaimed believers in Dr. Ambedkar’s thoughts and ideals. For Mayawati, Ramvilas Paswan, Ramdas Athawale and for Prakash Ambedkar. The question is for all the women seeking justice in cases of sexual violence. Without calling out the source of inspiration for such institutionalised rape and violence, mere kneejerk demands for the severest punishment to the perpetrators is not going to ensure dignity and safety of women,  now or in the future. The perpetrators are themselves victims conditioned by Manu’s laws. If we have to restore the high place for women in society that Dr. Ambedkar said India once gave them, we have to exorcise and eliminate the evil spell of Manu from the minds of one and all. An unambiguous, unapologetic condemnation of Manu-Smriti will be the beginning of true and meaningful justice for hundreds of victims of rape and patriarchal violence. Otherwise, Indian society will continue to be the realm of Manu ki Sarkar.  The women of Hatharas covered with full ghunghat we have been seeing on our television in the last few days are a sad reminder and testimony to the plight of Indian women under that Sarkar.  …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
